Province of Oriental Mindoro
The province of Oriental Mindoro, touted as the Rice Granary and Fruit Basket of Southern Tagalog is also the country’s emerging eco-tourism destination. The Verde Island Passage where most of the endemic species of marine life are found is at the apex of the coral triangle in Southeast Asia composed of the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. The Hon. Governor Alfonso Umali Jr. leads the province in his second term.
As the title given to the province, agriculture is the primary industry where rice, corn, coconut, vegetables, calamansi, banana, rambutan, marang or uloy, lanzones and even durian are produced. Livestock and poultry are also considerable in the area. There are rubber plantations as well. Mining is also notable where gold, coal, white marble and slate are produced. Tourism is still a budding industry but has considerable promise given the right support and priority.
