The complete Xbox Play Anywhere games list

Microsoft occupies a unique spot in the gaming space, as it’s both the default operating system for PC gamers and a powerhouse console manufacturer via its Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S family of systems. The Microsoft Store lives on both PCs, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, often showcasing many of the same games.

One of the neat perks of being an Xbox user comes from the Play Anywhere initiative. A single purchase (of the digital version) grants you access to both the PC and Xbox versions of select games. Xbox Play Anywhere titles feature cross-save, achievement syncing, and in some cases, cross-platform multiplayer.

As of now, the Xbox Play Anywhere program includes a vast array of more than 150 games, including first-party exclusives from the Forza, Halo, and Gears of War series. We’ve compiled a list of every Xbox Play Anywhere title available today.

In order to take advantage of Play Anywhere, you do need to purchase a digital copy of the game from the Microsoft Store.

One of Xbox’s big purchases looks like it’s about to pay off
Barbie rides in a pink car with Candy Crush Saga characters.

With its Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft got access to some highly successful franchises, like Diablo and Call of Duty. It also got more casual, mobile titles, like those from the Candy Crush franchise, thanks to Activision Blizzard subsidiary King. The hope was that it could expand into mobile gaming -- and it looks like players might see the fruits of that labor soon.

Microsoft confirmed to The Verge on Friday that testing has begun on a "browser-based mobile store." It looks like it'll soon be available to Xbox Insiders, according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Xbox enthusiast account Klorbrille. The post links to a site that has "mobilestore" in the URL and a "Coming Soon" banner.

Some big Xbox games might finally get release dates at Gamescom
A masked figure in Avowed. The mask looks like it's made of gold, it has glowing red eyes, and there's a hood over its head.

Xbox is taking the stage at Gamescom later this month, bringing three big presentations for Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Starfield: Shattered Space. These are all games set to come out in 2024, but none have release dates or have been fully revealed to the public.

While we got the most in-depth look MachineGames' upcoming Indiana Jones title and its gameplay during the company's summer showcase, we don't have a release date or any information about the larger story, besides that it takes place chronologically between Raiders of the Lost Arc and The Last Crusade, involves Nazis, and features a mysterious artifact (so, not too different from a typical Indiana Jones story). We do know that the majority of the gameplay will be in first person and that there will be puzzles, but little else.

Xbox console sales are down as services take over
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S getting splashed with water.

While Xbox continues to grow its software and content business thanks to the Activision Blizzard acquisition, the hardware side isn't doing quite as well. That's according to Microsoft's fourth-quarter financial report released Tuesday, which revealed that Xbox's hardware revenue dropped by 42% compared to this time last year. It didn't reveal exact numbers, but hardware was down 13% in its fourth-quarter 2023 financials compared to the previous year.

Hardware's downward trend isn't as big a deal when the company has been all in on expanding its other services, like Xbox Game Pass and Cloud Gaming. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted in the earnings call that Xbox's expansion to other platforms like Amazon TV is a part of the strategy to "expand from there so that we have content for everywhere people play games, starting with the PC." In general, revenue from content and services increased by 61%, boosted by the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
