Black Salt Games and Story Kitchen announced their intention to make a movie based on the 2023 horror indie game hit Dredge.

Story Kitchen is one of the media production companies behind the recent push for film and TV adaptations of video games. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies and upcoming Netflix show Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft are its biggest successes in actually getting these adaptations made, but it also has multimedia projects in the works based on games like Streets of Rage, Toejam & Earl, It Takes Two, and Disco Elysium. It’s adding a horror movie based on Dredge to that list because Story Kitchen thinks the game has “a captivatingly eerie and profoundly rich story that had us completely hooked from the very beginning.”

If you’re unfamiliar with Dredge, it was one of 2023’s surprise indie hits, having sold over 1 million copies within its first year of release. The core gameplay loop of Dredge is that of a simple fishing and boating game, as players go out, catch fish, sell them for money, and use that money to upgrade their boats. The game’s Lovecraftian undercurrent doesn’t take long to expose itself, though; before long, you’ll be catching weird fish and seeing horrific things out at sea if you stay away from shore for too long. It’s a memorable experience and one of Digital Trends’ favorite indie games of last year.

This project does not appear to be in active production at any major studios, but Story Kitchen is hoping the following logline catches their attention: “Think The Sixth Sense on the water. A grounded atmospheric cosmic horror blend of HP Lovecraft and Ernest Hemingway.”

Our favorite indies of 2023: 10 unforgettable games you need to try
The main character of El Paso Elsewhere appears in front of a graphic that says Top 10 Indies.

You could have spent the entirety of 2023 keeping up with new games and you still wouldn't have played a fraction of the excellent games released this year. That's especially true for the independent scene, which produced some fantastic works of art in-between gargantuan releases like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. I can't blame anyone for missing a few -- I feel like I've barely scratched the surface myself -- but you shouldn't leave 2023 without a handful of indies in your backlog.

Some of the year's best independent games sought to celebrate the human experience in a wide variety of ways. Games like Venba and Tchia both explored cultures that have always been underrepresented in gaming. More broadly, titles like Humanity, Viewfinder, and Chants of Sennaar offered odes to human ingenuity and communication in entirely different ways. Others got even more personal, dealing with complex forms of grief that aren't so easy to pin down.

Vampire Survivors was a breakout hit in 2022, earning several awards for its minimalistic action gameplay that's already inspired a new genre. Since then, developer Poncle has continued to support the game with new content. Adventures might be its most ambitious update yet, adding an entirely new mode.

Surprise Soulslike hit Lies of P is getting new DLC and a sequel
Concept art for Lies of P's DLC.

Developer Neowiz confirmed that DLC and a sequel to Lies of P, a Soulsike game starring Pinocchio, are in the works around a month and a half after its successful launch.

This was all revealed in a new video hosted by Jiwon Choi, Lies of P's Game Director. After confirming that the game sold 1 million copies since it launched on September 19, Choi says that Neowiz's "highest priority" projects are DLC and a sequel to Lies of P.
"The dev team is putting in significant effort, brainstorming and exploring different aspects of the project," Choi says. He then went on to confirm that the game's soundtrack will get a standalone release and highlight some impending balance changes, the fact that Rising Dodge will become a default skill and more that will be part of a patch that comes out later this month.
Lies of P - Director's Letter
When it comes to the Lies of P sequel, the video doesn't feature any more detailed information on it. We can only assume it will follow up on the character featured in the game's post-credit scene at this time. That said, Choi concludes the video by showing some concept art from the DLC that establishes a nautical theme. Choi says that this concept art "scratches merely the tip of an iceberg," though, so there's clearly a lot more for Neowiz to reveal about Lies of P's DLC.
Lies of P is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. You can play it via Xbox Game Pass if you're subscribed to that service.
