What’s new on Disney+ in August 2024

In the current streaming landscape, it sure seems like Disney is content to send most of its original programming to Hulu while leaving Disney+ with very few shows that will favor older audiences. This month, Disney+ is offering Grown-ish and Are You Sure?!, a BTS-themed travel show. Beyond that, the new shows are largely preschool friendly programming like SuperKitties and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures.

Because the number of new shows are so slim, Disney+ subscribers should be seriously considering whether the service is still worth the price they’re paying for it. The young-skewing shows may be ideal for families with children, but Disney+ isn’t offering much in the way of alternative programming for adults, even among National Geographic series. Disney+ prices have been rising since the service was launched in 2019, and we’re getting less for our money all of the time.

We really shouldn’t have to subscribe to both Disney+ and Hulu to get a fully realized streaming service with something for everyone. Hulu has a very good programming lineup for August, and there’s no reason why Disney+ couldn’t have something comparable again. Marvel fans don’t even have anything to look forward to until the end of September, when the WandaVision spinoff, Agatha All Along, arrives.

Our roundup of everything new on Disney+ in August 2024 can be found below, with our favorites highlighted in bold.

Not yet signed up to Disney+ or looking to upgrade? The Disney Bundle gets you three services for the price of one: Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for $14 per month.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in August 2024
Two people carrying weapons and ready to fight in The Lords of the Rings: The Rings of Power

You know it's going to be a good month on Amazon Prime Video when it starts with a new Batman animated series and closes with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2. It's kind of hard to top those two, but Prime Video is also adding a lot of movies in August including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy. Strangely enough, one of the new additions is Howard The Duck, the infamous 1986 adaptation of the Marvel comic that shares its name.

While the older titles are arriving on August 1, more recent movies like Drive-Away Dolls will be dropping on Prime Video throughout the month. That goes a long way toward keeping the film lineup fresh, and it's just one of the reasons why Prime Video ranks highly among our favorite streamers.

What’s new on HBO and Max in August 2024
Kit Harington in Industry.

It's disappointing to see that the lineup of new movies on Max in August is very thin. This has been the trend for Max in 2024, even though there are some great titles on the way including Amelie, Where the Wild Things Are, Sherlock Holmes, and How To Train Your Dragon. And while we're glad to see that Beetlejuice is back on Max, we have to ask why it ever left in the first place. One of the biggest attractions of Max is the library of Warner Bros. titles like Beetlejuice, which shouldn't be coming and going at random intervals.

HBO's Industry is back for a third season this month, and it's bringing Game of Thrones' Kit Harington into the cast. Speaking of GoT, the season 2 finale of House of the Dragon will arrive on Sunday, August 4. Animation fans may also want to check out Rick and Morty: The Anime Series, especially since the primary Rick and Morty cartoon won't be back until 2025 at the earliest. The rest of the month is dominated by Discovery's "reality" programming, which you can choose to ignore.

What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in August 2024
Justin H. Min in The Umbrella Academy.

If you love AMC programing, then you're really going to enjoy Netflix in August. As part of a content sharing deal with AMC and AMC+, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Fear the Walking Dead, Interview with the Vampire, Dark Winds, and more will have a temporary home on Netflix. This deal won't last forever, but we do know that the rest of the Walking Dead spinoffs including Dead City and The Ones Who Live will arrive on Netflix in January 2025.

As for Netflix's homegrown hits, The Umbrella Academy season 4 will wrap up that series, and we have high hopes for A Good Girl's Guide To Murder. Additionally, sci-fi and anime fans will likely want to check out Terminator Zero, a new animated series that looks like a much-needed respite from the last few cinematic sequels.
