The best animated movies on Netflix right now

The main characters of Trolls Band Together.
DreamWorks Animation

Netflix still has a stranglehold on animated movies, thanks to its deals with DreamWorks Animation, Illumination, and Universal. That’s why Netflix can weather the loss of films like The Lego Batman Movie, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, and Storks, because it can bring in new additions like Trolls Band Together and The Lorax. The streamer also has a new original animated film, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, which is a Netflix exclusive.

Additionally, Netflix still has two of 2023’s best animated movies: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Those films alone are big draws for the streamer, and Super Mario Bros. in particular spent months on the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. The amazing thing is that it still shows up on the list from time to time. But it’s currently been displaced by this month’s new titles. To find all of those films and more, keep scrolling down for the best animated movies on Netflix.

Looking for something else? We’ve also rounded up the best movies on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime, and the best shows on Disney+.

When DreamWorks Animation picked the name Trolls Band Together for this movie, audiences probably didn’t immediately guess that the band in question was a literal Troll boy band. It turns out that Branch (Justin Timberlake) was part of BroZone with his brothers, John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), Clay (Kid Cudi), and Floyd (Troye Sivan), years before the films. But BroZone went their own separate ways, and the family was fractured.

Now, Branch and his girlfriend, Poppy (Anna Kendrick), discover that Floyd has been kidnapped, and they have to accompany John Dory on a quest to find his other brothers if they want to rescue Floyd. Some hard feelings still remain among the bros, and Poppy is about to have an unexpected family reunion of her own.

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax was a personal favorite of the author, and a powerful children’s fable about conserving nature rather than exploiting it. The film of the same name expands the short story to movie-length, with Danny DeVito as the Lorax. He speaks for the trees and he’s the only one who really cares about the forest around him.

A 12-year-old boy, Ted Wiggins (The Iron Claw‘s Zac Efron), convinces an inventor, Once-ler (Ed Helms), to share the story about how the Lorax was driven away. But in the present, Ted has a more pressing problem if he wants to save his town from the corrupt mayor, Aloysius O’Hare (Rob Riggle).

While most of American animation companies have abandoned the hand-drawn style that used to define the medium, Studio Ponoc’s new anime film, The Imaginary, proves that this artistic approach still has a lot of life in it. Among hand-drawn films, only Studio Ghibli releases have been more visually impressive than The Imaginary. This film is just stunning to look at.

The story follows Rudger, an imaginary boy who was created by a young girl named Amanda to be her companion for made-up adventures. And while Rudger loves being with Amanda, he’s all too aware that as an Imaginary, his existence could be fleeting. Rudger eventually discovers that imaginary beings like himself could find sanctuary at The Town of Imaginaries. However, something unspeakable is preying upon the Imaginaries that live there, and Rudger may be the next target.

How do you make a movie about Legos into one of the most entertaining family films of the 21st century? Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller solved that problem by making a movie about nothing into a film about everything that Lego touches. That includes various Lego franchises, and even a moving sentiment about the power of creativity late in the story.

The Lego Movie follows an ordinary Lego construction worker, Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt), as he finds himself thrust into the struggle for the soul of the Lego universe as Lego Batman (Will Arnett), Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), and Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) attempt to stop Lord Business (Will Ferrell) from fusing everything together in a permanent state. Liam Neeson also has a very funny role as Good Cop/Bad Cop, who switches personalities on a dime.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind screenwriter Charlie Kaufman may seem like an odd choice to adapt Emma Yarlett’s children’s novel Orion and the Dark, but Kaufman and director Sean Charmatz have delivered one of Netflix’s best original animated films to date. There’s also a very good chance that it could be a contender when next year’s Oscar season comes around.

The film follows Orion (Jacob Tremblay), a kid who is frightened out of his mind by just about everything, especially the dark. Over time, this becomes very annoying to Dark (Black Birds Paul Walter Hauser), the literal embodiment of darkness. In a conciliatory gesture, Dark not only reveals himself to Orion but also offers to help him conquer his fears by taking him on an unforgettable adventure that may change both of their lives.

The 50 best shows on Netflix in August 2024
The cast of The Umbrella Academy.

Whenever Netflix brings one of its signature series to an end, it almost always tops the list of the most popular shows on Netflix. This week, that honor belongs to The Umbrella Academy, which is wrapping up its four-season run. But last week's No. 1, A Good Girl's Guide To Murder, is hanging on at No. 2. That's going to bode well for its renewal chances.

Also this week, the CBS drama Fire Country has premiered on Netflix and already found a new audience. We've seen network shows perform very well on Netflix in the past. My theory is that the longer seasons of network shows make these series more binge-able. And few Netflix originals can match the 22 episodes that Fire Country had in its first season.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (August 2024)
The cast of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

It must be action week on Netflix, because multiple action films are now among the most popular movies on Netflix. Topping the list this week is Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, with the other Jack Reacher film placing highly as well. Another older action flick, Red, is also back on Netflix and heating up the top 10 as well.

The most surprising thing about Netflix's movies list at the moment is that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has fallen out of the top 10 after less than two weeks. That lack of staying power on the top streaming service, combined with its lackluster box office, may dim the prospects for more Ghostbusters flicks.

Best new movies coming to theaters in 2024
The cast of Borderlands.

Have you ever seen a movie die before it reached audiences in theaters? We may be seeing that this weekend with Borderlands, Eli Roth's video game adaptation, which is also a shameless Guardians of the Galaxy knock-off. It was already a bad idea to release this film so close to Deadpool & Wolverine, which is closing in on $1 billion worldwide and should be able to reach $500 million domestically very soon. Borderlands is not only trying to topple that juggernaut, it's arriving with some of the worst reviews this side of Madame Web. There may be a new champion on the list of the worst films of 2024.

The one movie that might get some traction this weekend is It Ends With Us, the romantic drama starring Blake Lively, the wife of Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds. Lively has a cameo in the latter, which could put her in the rare position of being in both the No. 1 and the No. 2 films at the same time. It's counterprogramming that may work, but we'll have to wait until Sunday to know for sure. In the meantime, we've updated our roundup of the best new movies coming to theaters in 2024. Keep scrolling down for your guide to the rest of this year's films.
