Ghostbusters (1984)
Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters, of course. The franchise has continued into this decade with new movies like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which was released earlier this year. But still, nothing quite compares to the original from way back in 1984. Turning into a pop culture phenomenon, the proton-pack-wearing team of professors suit up to battle paranormal ghosts that are wreaking havoc on New York City.
The visual effects might not be as impressive as today’s iterations, but the original cast and their chemistry, the humor combined with action, and intriguing storylines remain unmatched. Relive the fun with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis as Peter, Ray, and Egon, along with Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton, and Ernie Hudson. With many actors reprising their roles in the newest films, you can re-watch Ghostbusters then dive into the new movies for a marathon weekend.
The Lost Boys (1987)
Featuring a who’s who of young male actors from the ’80s, The Lost Boys is another iconic movie that defined a generation and has since become a cult classic. When teenage boys Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move with their mother to a small town in California, they discover that the town is a haven for vampires. They meet with vampire hunters who warn them of the threat of the undead, and a battle begins between seemingly good and evil. It becomes especially dangerous when Michael is at risk of transforming. If they can kill the head vampire, Michael might be saved.
With a wonderful cast that also includes Dianne Wiest, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, and Jami Gertz, The Lost Boys fits right up there with movies like The Goonies and Stand By Me that have high re-watch value. One part non-traditional coming-of-age story and one part allusion to Peter Pan, building on the idea of boys who are never able to grow up, The Lost Boys offers humor, horror, and famous faces you recall from your youth. Relive the magic before The Lost Boys is gone from Tubi.
Fargo (1996)
There’s renewed interest in Fargo with the TV series, which premiered its fifth season after a three-year hiatus in November 2023. The movie, however, is what started it all. A black comedy crime drama, Fargo centers around Marge (Frances McDormand), a police chief investigating a triple homicide. It all starts when Jerry (William H. Macy), is in a precarious position after embezzling money from the car dealership where he works. Desperate with nowhere to turn, he hires two criminals, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Peter Stormare), to kidnap his wife so he can fool her wealthy father, Wade (Harve Presnell), into sending ransom money. But the situation ends up leading to three murders.
With a near-perfect 95% Rotten Tomatoes critic rating, Fargo is one of those movies that gets better the more you watch it. Re-watching the movie then diving into the five seasons of the series will give you new appreciation for the solid writing, acting, and storylines across the board. “Immaculately plotted, beautifully written, and superbly shot by British cinematographer Roger Deakins…” comments Tom Ryan of The Sunday Age of the movie, “Fargo is a treasure.”
Wonder Woman (2017)
Gal Gadot takes on the iconic role of Wonder Woman in this superhero movie of the same name, which is the fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). In this prequel and spinoff od Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Diana Prince (Gadot), otherwise known as Wonder Woman, is an immortal Amazon warrior demigoddess. In present day, she recalls her past when she was captured during World War I. Trained as a warrior, she uses the god-killer sword and the lasso to help fend off attacks from Ares.
Wonder Woman received rave reviews across the board, with many critics praising the chemistry between Gadot and her co-star Chris Pine, who plays Steve Trevor, her love interest and an American pilot. Our reviewer calls the Patty Jenkins movie a “joy to watch” and a “fitting tribute to one of the greatest superheroes of all time.”
Thelma & Louise (1991)
One of the defining movies of the ‘90s, Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise tells the story of two friends, played by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, who set out on a road trip that turns darker than anticipated. When Louise shoots a man who attempted to rape Thelma, they go on the run. Do they call the police and risk facing a murder charge or flee?
Featuring a young Brad Pitt in his breakout role as a handsome drifter named J.D., the story in Thelma & Louise takes more twists and turns from there. Considered a landmark feminist movie, Thelma & Louise earned six Academy Award nominations and put Pitt on the map, paving his path to superstardom.
Rain Man (1988)
Tom Cruise might be known today for his incredible action movies, but back in the 1980s and ’90s, he starred in more subtle dramas, one of which was Rain Man. In this road comedy- drama, he is Charlie Babbitt, a selfish young man who learns that his wealthy and estranged father has passed and left everything to his other son, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), an autistic savant. Not even aware that he had a half-brother, Charlie visits Raymond and tries to squeeze at least half the estate from him.
In this heartwarming movie, Raymond’s calm and sweet demeanor and tremendous intellect start to endear him to Charlie. Over time, Charlie begins to soften, and realizes what’s truly important. The iconic movie takes you on an emotional journey while allowing for some laughs along the way.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
The Usual Suspects is one of those movies people still talk about to this day, even 30 years after it premiered. Known for delivering one of the most shocking twists ever in a film, the crime thriller boasts a talented ensemble cast lead by Stephen Baldwin, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Pollack, Chazz Palminteri, and Kevin Spacey. The story follow the interrogation of Roger “Verbal” Kint (Spacey), a small-time con man who is among the only survivors of a massive ship fire. He recalls the actions of a mysterious crime lord known as Keyser Söze, who he purports is responsible for what happened.
Even if you know how it ends, The Usual Suspects is the type of movie worth watching again and again to pick up on subtle hints and clues throughout. A master class in acting and superb writing, it’s arguably one of the craftiest movies ever made.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Want to have a superhero movie marathon? Check out Wonder Woman 1984 as a follow-up to Wonder Woman. Also directed by Patty Jenkins, this movie, the ninth in the DCEU, takes place in 1984 when Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is working at the Smithsonian Institution while also secretly fulfilling her duties as Wonder Woman. When she and a shy co-worker named Barbara (SNL cast member Kristen Wiig) notice an inscription on an artifact that can supposedly grant the holder one wish, Barbara uses it and becomes as strong, sexy, and cool as Diana. But, as it turns out, the Dreamstone was created by the God of Lies and not all is what it seems. Plus, there’s a greedy businessman named Maxwell “Max Lord” Lorenzano (Pedro Pascal) who wants to get his hands on it to gain tremendous power.
Like or it hate it, Wonder Woman is a fun, action-packed movie that has a slightly campy feel to it, but that’s OK. Our reviewer admits that the movie is a tad too long, but loves the moments of spectacle as Diana is in full control of her powers, and isn’t afraid to use them.
Point Break (1991)
Since Keanu Reeves is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to the latest John Wick movie, it’s the perfect time to look back at some of Reeves’ earlier action movies. In the early ‘90s, the now bona fide action hero starred in Point Break, a crime action movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow.
The movie, which also stars the late Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey, is about Johnny (Reeves), a former quarterback and rookie FBI agent who helps a more experienced agent Angelo (Busey) investigate a series of bank robberies by a group who wear rubber masks of former presidents. The suspicion is that the criminals are surfers, so Johnny is sent to go undercover in the community. It’s a role that was tailor-made for Reeves and marked a perfect transition from his more comedic roles (think the Bill & Ted movies) to the action films for which he later became known.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
As classic a slasher horror film as you’ll ever find, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is must-see viewing for any fan of the genre. There are no flashy special effects, nor gratuitously gruesome scenes. But it is a terrifying movie about a group of friends who become victims of a family of cannibals and a sick killer known as Leatherface.
The first blockbuster slasher film to use power tools as a central weapon, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is considered one of the most influential horror films ever made. What makes it even more impressive is that the movie was made on a relatively small budget with a core cast of mostly unknown actors.
